A woman is pushing a child in a stroller up a hill and out of the park. It is afternoon. The sky is beginning to darken and the temperature has dropped a little. The child’s red face is wet with tears and perhaps snot. She(?) opens her mouth and lets out a series of high pitched, drawn out sounds. These sounds echo around the nearby buildings. As our paths cross, I offer the woman a small crinkle-eyed smile.
I’d like to say that child was ‘loud’ but tried to work around it as labeling a child ‘loud’ can set the stage for conflict. Imagine if someone labeled your child ‘loud.’ How would you react?
Now I’m thinking of how my family and I are adjusting to city life after living in the back blocks – we are much quieter that we have been before – but our neighbours possibly call us loud!
